The admissions process

  • Initial enquiry – Your Local Authority contacts us to see if Journey Independent School could be the right setting for your child.
  • Referral and documents – The LA sends your child’s EHCP and supporting reports so we can understand their needs.
  • Review – Our senior team and SENDCo look carefully at the information to decide if we can meet your child’s needs effectively.
  • Visit and assessment – You and your child are invited to visit the school to see whether our environment, teaching style and support feel like a good fit.
  • Trial period (if needed) – Sometimes we arrange a short two-day trial so your child can experience the school before a final decision is made.
  • Decision and offer – If everyone agrees that Journey is the right place, we make a formal offer of a place.
  • Local Authority panel – The LA panel then reviews the offer and confirms funding for your child’s placement.
  • Transition – Once everything is confirmed, we agree a start date, arrange transport (if needed) and create a personalised plan to help your child settle in smoothly.

What kind of pupils do you accept?

We welcome children and young people aged 5–18 who have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) and whose needs can best be met through a specialist, supportive learning environment.

Can my child join part-way through the school year?

Yes. Admissions take place throughout the year whenever a suitable space is available. We work closely with families and the Local Authority to make transitions as smooth as possible.

Do we need to apply directly to the school?

Referrals usually come through your Local Authority’s SEND team. However, parents and carers are always welcome to contact us for an informal discussion before a formal referral.

What happens before my child starts?

You and your child will be invited for a visit. In some cases, we arrange a short trial period to make sure everyone feels confident the school is the right fit.

Is there a waiting list?

If we are at capacity, we maintain a waiting list and liaise with Local Authorities as soon as spaces become available.
